Default Oh. M'God. Help.

Okay, since I got BitTorrent because people HERE convinced me to, I'm bringing my plea of help to you.

It's come to the time where I'm deleting some of the things I downloaded.

Only problem is, it says it's all being used by another program, and won't delete them. I'm not using them in another program!

So, uh, no! This cannot happen! This is GIGS OF SPACE I need to free up AND I AM SO FREAKING SCREWED IF I CAN'T FIGURE OUT SOME WAY TO DELETE THIS SHIT.

So help. NOW.

*resumes Panic Mode*

Note: I don't have BitTorrent, so there might be an easier way to do this.

As far as I understand it, BitTorrent allows others to download files from your computer, so the BitTorrent Program is the one using the files.

Here's a surefire way to do it, but it's a bit complex:

Start Your Computer In Safe Mode:

Instructions for starting in Safe Mode

Then delete the files!

If you're using msconfig, you'll need to change the settings back to normal or else it will keep booting in safe mode.

If you have any questions, email or IM me!

When you hit ctrl+alt+delete, does it show any part of this BitTorrent program still actively running? Maybe if you forcibly end task from there, you can then delete the files.

But generally, if the files didn't exist before, there shouldn't be any reason why your computer suddenly needs them now... the safe mode thing described above is what I would try next. As long as all you do is delete only the offensive files, it shouldn't mess up your computer.

Even if it does, all you need is a recovery copy of your OS to boot up, your files should still all be fine. I had to use recovery on my old computer (Windows 95) 3 or 4 times, I think.

Yeah, I think this is a good point. Make sure BitTorrent is not running. Make sure whatever you use to view the movies is not running. If you still can't delete them, and BitTorrent doesn't automatically start when you turn on your computer, reboot your computer normally and then try deleting them.

Then again, Safe mode will work too.

This would happen to me with TorrentStorm; whenever it crashed, it didn't take the downloading subprograms with it. Baffled me for a few hours until I CTRL ALT DEL-ted and saw what was going on.

If you see bt - anything - .exe running, kill it. Generally speaking, Windows won't let you gun the really important stuff (which is started as *service* instead), but it works for all BitTorrent programs I've seen. Don't have anything important open when you do this - the chances to gun something else are small, but there, and better safe than sorry.

Argh, looks like safe mode is going to be the way to go. *SIGH*

EDIT: Yes, yes, here I come, safe mode. I uninstalled BT and it still refuses to delete the stuff. :[

Alright, I did the Safe Mode stuff, freed up half the hard drive *coughs*, but... I have one more question.

I'm getting the impression that every time I restart the computer it's going to ask me about the stuff I did while in safe mode and tell me that it wants me to cancel the stuff I did in safe mode (WTF!?) and what-not... how do I keep this from happening every time?

And then when I pressed okay on the little msconfig screen that popped up there, it wanted me to restart for the changes (WHAT changes?) I made to take effect.

Uhhh... well, my changes have already taken effect... judging from what I did, it shouldn't be showing me this stuff anymore!

Well, what did you do in safe mode except for deleting files?
